Subaru has addressed this lack of energy for 2021 by plucking the 2.5-liter engine from the larger Legacy and Outback models and making it an option in the Crosstrek. The plug-in-hybrid model proved to be quicker and shaved 0.9 second off the 2.0-liter model's zero-to-60-mph time. In our testing, an automatic model needed a leisurely 9.2 seconds to reach 60 mph.

As with many of its competitors, getting up to highway speeds can be a bit painful, no matter whether you choose the standard manual transmission or the optional automatic. The Crosstrek's base 152-hp four-cylinder engine makes a lot of noise but doesn't offer a lot of motivation. Like most other Subarus, all-wheel drive is standard on the Crosstrek, a rarity in the small SUV marketplace where it's usually optional or sometimes not offered at all. The new Sport model's enhanced features-unique 17-inch wheels, yellow-stitched upholstery, carbon-fiber trim, and advanced driving modes-are nice, but the more powerful 182-hp 2.5-liter engine is more worthy of the upgrade. The new Sport trim comes with several unique features that won't be offered on other Crosstreks, including Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud settings for the standard all-wheel-drive system. The new 2.5-liter flat-four has been lifted from the mid-size Legacy sedan and Outback station wagon and plopped under the hood of Sport and Limited models of the Crosstrek the languid 2.0-liter engine is still in the mix, but relegated to the base and Premium models only. What's New for 2021?Īlong with a light visual refresh that includes new front bumper and grille designs, the 2021 Crosstrek gains a Sport model and a more powerful engine option. We can't imagine the Crosstrek has what it takes to tackle gnarly, boulder-strewn off-road trails alongside Jeeps, but like its larger siblings-the Forester and the Ascent-it offers plenty of all-weather security, a value-packed features list, and an accommodating-if somewhat bland-interior.

Not into an electrified powertrain? Two different gasoline-powered four-cylinder engines are offered-both in Subaru's characteristic horizontally opposed four-cylinder arrangement. Based on the Impreza hatchback, the Crosstrek inherits a decidedly carlike driving experience but offers more ground clearance and truckier styling-and it can be had as a plug-in hybrid. The 2021 Crosstrek subcompact SUV epitomizes the Japanese automaker's personality in a neatly sized and thoughtful package. When it comes to rugged car-based crossovers, few brands do it quite like Subaru.
